Notice the series of adverbs describing Gatsby from here:
“blankly”, “vaguely”, “hollowly”, “miserably” — his dream is on the verge of success or failure and he does not know which. Do they foreshadow the end? Do they reflect the failure of his “hope”? It is as if he already lacks life.
