Nick seems surprised when Gatsby claims to have earned the money to buy his house because Gatsby had previously stated that he “lived like a young rajah” off of the money he inherited from his wealthy ancestors. This new information about the origins of Gatsby’s fortune makes the man even more puzzling to the narrator because he cannot decide whether Gatsby belongs in the aristocratic class.
