Chartreuse

from F. Scott Fitzgerald – The Great Gatsby (Chapter V) on Rap Genius

Meaning

Chartreuse is a yellow green French liqueur that has 130 herbs distilled in it. The alcohol content in chartreuse ranges from 30-70%, and its flavor is supposed to improve with age.

Chartreuse also bespeaks Old World wealth and mystique as it is made in one distillery in France, and the recipe was given to the Carthusian monks by an Alchemist in 1605. Even today, only two monks know the recipe and each only knows half. In fact, the original recipe (Elixer Vegetal) is still banned in the US because the monks would not tell the FDA the ingredients.
