Atlantic City

from F. Scott Fitzgerald – The Great Gatsby (Chapter VIII) on Rap Genius

Atlantic City is located in New Jersey. It was a hub for tourism during the 1920’s, since many people flocked there during Prohibition to get a drink in the back rooms of bars and restaurants. This is where “Nucky” Thompson (of Boardwalk Empire fame) rose to power as one of the biggest bootleggers in America. It is likely that Fitzgerald intentionally chose a city so closely associated with bootlegging given our title character’s past.

FUN FACT: The board game Monopoly was based upon the layout of Atlantic City.
