Have you your father's leave? What says Polonius?
Claudius is asking Laertes if his father Polonius approves of his return to France. Once again, we see how much Claudius seems to treasure Polonius’s friendship, even though for most of the play, Polonius seems more like a pompous blowhard than a treasured advisor. This dynamic may lend more credence to the theory that Polonius had some part in the murder of Hamlet’s father, or at least in helping Claudius secure the throne. Could Claudius be granting favors to Polonius and his family, in return for his continued discretion?
