The head is not more native to the heart,
The hand more instrumental to the mouth,
Than is the throne of Denmark to thy father.

from William Shakespeare – Hamlet Act 1 Scene 2 on Rap Genius

Meaning

Claudius is drawing an analogy, saying that his relationship to Polonius (Laertes father) is closer, more important, and more effective than that of the brain to the heart (the brain controls the heart), or the hand to mouth (the hand feeds the mouth).

Some scholars believe that this relationship between Claudius and Polonius, together with their later acting as “lawful espials,” could intimate that Polonius may have had some role in the murder of Old Hamlet. This is certainly not made explicit in the play, but is certainly worth considering.
