The point of view of the narrator and the point of view of the author cannot be inferred to be the same. Shifting narrators are present throughout the work (i.e. the patois accent in the first line and later in the work). It is only the words of the last line that can reasonably be attributed to “Common”— itself perhaps just one artistic construction of Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr.
