A Quartz contentment, like a stone –
It is curious that quartz oscillators are used in clocks to maintain the steady rhythm necessary used to tell time. Although Dickinson was long deceased before the first quartz oscillator clock was developed, this fact can remind us of the timelessness of pain and that tragedy leaves us cold and mechanical.
“Quartz contentment” suggests a— paradoxically— feelingless kind of contentment— such as a stone might display.
