There are many good moments, but my all-time favorite memory is the revue period. In Norway, you get to choice between doing a book report or participating in a revue the last semester of high school. I, of course, chose the revue. We’d stay at school after class 3-4 times a week to write sketches, practice the sketches, and do fun activities. It was a great time for everyone to bond and I felt closer to the people there through the process.

They were very strict about everyone handing in at least one draft per week, and you had to pay if you didn’t, which is ridiculous. They didn’t like what I handed in and I was struck with a writer’s block one week, so to avoid having to pay I found a YouTube video and wrote it down in sketch-form. Everyone loved it and I was even cast as the main role, which is very ironic. They still have no idea. That sketch was also a great hit.

I cherish the whole period, but the actual performance nights were the best. We were all super nervous, but we hyped each other up backstage making it easier. Once I got on stage it wasn’t so bad after all. I’ll proudly say that I killed my performances, produced tons of laughs, and felt like I was in my element (completely messed up the group dances though). Getting such a positive response from a crowd unfamiliar with you is the greatest feeling. The local critic gave us a 5 out of 6 and mentioned two sketches I was involved in as the best. So that was pretty cool.

Not technically in school, but it’s school related, so it works. ;) And I'mma stop rambling. Could probably keep talking.

The one that came in my last Birchbox!

As a five year old, I don’t remember what I was reading. I do remember going to Disneyworld that year and hating kindergarten with the nuns. When I was five, I wrote a book on dinosaurs—vividly coloured and drawn on about 10 pieces of notepaper held together by a flimsy staple. It was a limited edition. I cried when I discovered my grandmother kept it 20 years later when I started sorting through her papers in her last months.

At 10, Arthur Roth came out with “The Iceberg Hermit” which was assigned over winter break for 4th graders. They sold it in those scholastic newsletters we used to get in school every few weeks. The story of a young man shipwrecked with a polar bear who become his friend.

I think that was the first year I attempted the “Iliad” which I still hold close (I love that scene where Priam begs Achilles for the body of Hector).

At 15, I discovered Thoreau’s “Walden” and it has been a steady companion since. I still wonder if these same stars do indeed shine down over other fields.

At 20, learning from my best professor at Rutgers, Stephen Bronner, that Karl Marx’s favourite author was Honore de Balzac (because of how Balzac ridiculed his own class), I quickly fell in with “Pere Goriot” and “Illusions Perdue”–and read about 70% of his oeuvre. Bronner also insisted I read Thomas Mann’s “Magic Mountain” which I return to frequently. It was about that time that I came to love “Four Quartets” by Eliot after hearing “East Coker” dramatically read–although I think my favourite passage is that Dantesque “In the uncertain hour before the morning” air raid passage in “Little Gidding”.

The longer & varied answers to ‘why’…
- his character in the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video games always had the coolest arsenal of tricks, which is how I got introduced to him in total honesty
- he’s been around forever. Dude’s been skating professionally since the late 70s. Most people who don’t know much about skateboarding will think of 2 types: street (jumping down stairs, handrails, etc) and vert (halfpipes). Well before either of these, freestyle skating (flatground tricks including spins, handstands and all sorts of crazy stuff you don’t see today) was popular – and Rodney was the king. Eventually freestyle lost popularity and so Rodney adapted by finding new ways to integrate his freestyle tricks into the more popular street-oriented style
- he’s invented almost every single skate trick in the book, including the most basic flatground ollie (aka jumping on your board)! Here’s a list I found on Yahoo
- he’s innovative even off a skateboard. He’s started up a number of companies that manufacture skateboard parts with the aim of pushing skateboard design to new levels, such as by using new materials, manufacturing processes, etc. In fact, he’s become such an icon for innovation in the skate world that he’s been invited to give a TED talk and is becoming somewhat of a spokesperson for hi-tec silicon valley companies

For someone who isn’t into skating, this is probably TL;DR lol – but it should at least answer ur question ;)

Anything involving punk rock. Most people think that punk was a new thing that just sprang up out of nowhere during the late 70’s, when in reality punk was a merger of surf and garage rock from the 60’s, given a faster, louder edge. This leads back to the do-wop bands of the 50’s.
