“Licence To Kill” (sometimes also spelled as “License To Kill”) is a James Bond theme song sung by Gladys Knight and released as a single in 1989.

Originally, Eric Clapton and Vick Flick were tapped to write and perform the film’s theme song in the style of Clapton’s successful guitar-and-vocal Journeyman album. However, producers changed their minds in favor of Gladys Knight’s big ballad.

“Licence To Kill” got its cinematic bombast from some heavy hitters. The song was produced by Narada Michael Walden, who proved his track record with handfuls of hits for Whitney Houston. Co-writer Walter Afanasieff would prove his mettle within 2 years by performing similar feats for future superstar Mariah Carey.

Knight appears in the music video performing in a svelte black tuxedo and bow tie, with short, slicked-back black hair. The song reached #18 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary charts in the US, and #10 on pop charts in the UK.

We just did a big story over at Technical.ly about the company’s relationship with B Labs, which certifies it as socially beneficent. The IPO is going to raise issues with that certification, one way or another.

And there's another anxiety, the economic one, the one underlies all the hand-wringing about undisciplined American kids. What kind of discipline can prepare a kid for the fact that there won't be nearly enough opportunities for all of them when they grow up? What will all those communication skills matter to those kids who don't find their place among the lucky few to be spared that old-fashioned obligation—to sit still and take whatever the world gives ... How Do You Discipline a Child in the Post-Hitting Era?

Gee, I thought she was going to acknowledge that a lot of children still get hit all the time! Though by her faulty logic, I suppose kids who’ve been beaten are now better prepared for a bad economy?
