At first you may be tempted to say, oh but that’s because Cersei’s mean! But Game of Thrones does a fascinating job of showing there are many ways of being a woman in (and out) of power, and there are just as many ways to cut them down. In each of their respective plots, Daenaerys, Sansa, Arya, Margaery Tyrell, Brienne of Tarth (and soon the Sand Snakes in Dorne) all navigate what it means to be a woman in, on the edge of, or out of power.

The closer (geographically and otherwise) women get to King’s Landing and the Iron Throne, the stronger the demand that they “act like a lady.” But Daenaerys gets undermined by her court all the time too. Arya and Brienne have each been threatened with rape more than once.
