“Cut” is one of Sylvia Plath’s best poems – pretty much everyone agrees on that and there are numerous great lectures on “Cut”; I’m going to go ahead and read it – if possible I think you should read Plath’s poetry aloud yourself, listen to someone else, and listen to her recordings.

Being powerless, ineffectual, and/or useless:

When I was younger I was claustrophobic for the same reasons, I think. Today I could certainly be tied down in some weird bondage scenario (I’m sexy and my life is dope) BUT what I fear is a situation where things are out of my control.

This could be financial – like if insurance isn’t going to come through. It could be physical – like if someone I care for is sick and I can neither comfort nor cure them. It can take many forms.

Thus, it scares me.

I’m used to being good at 99.9% of what I try and while now I’ve focused with my degrees and chosen an area of specialty, I still know that, with effort I can learn advanced math. I can still dominate at tennis. I can still do everything I want to do to a high level.

But if I were on a survival scenario with blind and deaf people whom I couldn’t communicate with and they were all stronger than me leaving me purposeless, I’d feel like shit and be terrified.

I don’t like leaving my fate in the hands of others, in other words, I suppose.

“we are not told.” –

Do not use “they” the way you have throughout this paper. It is an antecedent error. In informal English it would be clear that you mean the unknowable “they” but in formal English you must clarify Who is saying things or hiding the truth.

By changing this sentence to “we are not told” I have eliminated the need for “they” altogether. You should be able to do that with some success so you don’t have to rewrite the whole paper.
