This is interesting, but that’s not what jumped at me at first. Would you really pronounce “balled” as “ballad?” To me the latter is never really a pronunciation option, but maybe I’m not familiar with the word.

In poetry you often get an extra stress on the “-ed” for words so anytime I see an “-ed” in poetry I wonder if I’m supposed to pronounce it or not. Wing Ed Horse or Wing’d Horse – learned or Learn Ed Scholar – etcetera. Usually scholars indicate those pronunciations with an é but that goes in and out of fashion for the poets themselves. Balléd would be pronounced like ballad so that’s always seemed purposeful to me @dalmo

Babushka – rather than a piece of cloth like I said, usually does more specifically refer to a hat, further driving home the whiteness and the white/red dichotomy.

I’m drawn by the emphasis on the stain and how Cave is a poetry aficionado.

Rappers who tend to use big words in their lyrics don’t impress Q. They may claim to be thoughtful and philosophical, but Q suspects all that pretension is just an attempt to hide that they’re broke.

Of course, assuming this isn’t satirical, Three Stacks has vigorously argued for the other side of this notion – lamenting the fact that rap is restricted in subject matter in “Return of the ‘G,’”

I thought this was a quick diss towards T.I. Around the time Tip was having issues with his wife. And of course he is known to have random lines of higher vocabulary for no reason.

i think this was a shot at Q’s nay-sayers and haters of his musical growth. If you put the first line in quotes as if it came from another person, the verse reveals itself. Q has been evolving since day 1 and I can see ppl criticising him the same way Jay Rock fans did when 90059 first dropped.

I have to support SMU in some fashion since I did go there after A&M. Can’t say I’m happy TCU is #3 (or that SMU still can’t recover from the infamous Death Penalty).

Also, I really don’t see TCU standing up to the big SEC teams; the Crimson Tide would wreck them – I don’t see them as a number 3 team.

@dalmo yeah I’m probably going to redo the video with fixed mic stuff on several of these tates. The “Cut” and “Lady Lazarus” ones are fine – as is the one for “Plath” overall iirc. I just haven’t had time to get to these yet. I have to really project my voice as if lecturing to get anything decent out of this particular mic it seems.

I don’t understand the reading of “pink fizz” as hydrogen peroxide. Why is it pink?

The average home in England at the time this was written would have had a disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide that was pink in color (I think even hydrogen peroxide is sometimes made pink for safety reasons since it’s colourless in it’s natural form); the reference might not be exactly to hydrogen peroxide but it is to the equivalent household disinfectant @dalmo

@Bradapalooza It’d be interesting to find out whether your first claim is actually true. Do we have records of this? I get that it could be true, but I’d favor your reading much more strongly if the extratextual evidence was there.

Oh yeah there’s plenty. @dalmo Go ask an old person what this line means and they will definitely tell you disinfectant. In fact, most early lectures on this poem never make the Rose champagne claim – in academia I’ve been challenged for saying that by every professor I’ve talked about this poem with.
