Stand Billy between Sherwood Forest’s Prince of Thieves and Gotham’s Masked Avenger

from Adam Mansbach – Rage is Back (Chapter 1) on Rap Genius

Meaning

Dondi situates his dad between Robin Hood and Batman, but as soon as he does, he tears that right down. We’re getting a quick glimpse here of the conflict he carries around, and has for a long time – the anger, the desire to forgive and understand his dad’s absence. He’s been dealing with this, trying to intellectualize it, from a young age, but it’s impossible to rationalize and accept. He’s just giving us a glimpse now, for a couple of reasons: he doesn’t want to derail the story just as it’s starting, and he doesn’t want to burden us with his own baggage – both because he’s somewhat guarded, and because he views that as self-indulgent, narcissistic.
