I remember “new sincerity” was a term they used in Austin, Texas back in the late 80’s to describe people like Daniel Johnston, so that’s what I thought you were talking about for a minute there.

There’s no problem with a little dry humor now and then, but you can’t let it impair your inability to interact with others or think without circumspection.

yeah, tbh i love irony still. i also love daniel johnston. from what i understand new sincerity is arguably the next movement after post-modernism. it’s really too soon to call it anything but it sure beats post-postmodernism as far as titles go.

I don’t really buy that heavy irony/irony turned up to 11 is specifically a contemporary issue. Huge swathes of Chaucer are just layers and layers or irony. And I"m sorry, but 30 Rock is not “meta-television-irony” just ‘cos they made a show about SNL.

yeah also mark twain, jonathan swift, etc. how you define sincerity is somewhat subjective i guess.
