This little morbid detail perfectly emphasizes Wolfshiem’s malevolence in a subtle way. Richard Yates considered this to be a great example of T.S. Eliot’s objective correlative, which “is a literary term referring to a symbolic article used to provide explicit, rather than implicit, access to such traditionally inexplicable concepts as emotion or colour.”
Wolfshiem is a purveyor of death in every sense of the word. Not only is he a gangster who has people killed, he also wears accessories which are remnants of death.
The cufflinks are symbolic to Mr. Wolfsheim’s shallowness as he takes pride in wearing human molars, which he likely obtained through torture or cruelty. This therefore, makes readers infer that he is a purveyor of death
Compare these trophies to the tokens Gatsby carries in his pockets …
Wolfsklem is implying that he killed the person that looked at his wife. Its implied here but is supported in the next paragraph. He killed the guy “looking at his wife”.
