I was trying to go for a heaven-hell allusion, an artifact from an earlier draft in which I described Mike as the Virgil to my Dante, and he was guiding me through the seven levels of Hell

There was “COKE BOYS” scribbled in graffiti on the wall–Mike told us that was when French Montana and his crew came to the club

The concept from this story comes from this…

I originally proposed to my editor, Wilbert Cooper, a story about spending 24 hours in a Wal-Mart. Me and a friend, Samir Amrania, went down to a Wal-Mart in Southern Ohio, but Samir is Indian and has a beard, so they distrusted him (it was all white people), followed us around, saw what we were doing, and asked us to leave.

Wilbert then asked me if I’d be interested in doing another 24-hour story at a place like Penn Station or Port Authority. I went back to him with the idea of doing it at a strip club…the only problem was I was under 21. So we luckily found Show Palace, which was 18 and up AND had the longest hours of any club in the Tri-State area.

Mike has an interesting history. He was a boxer and used to own a club, which was closed down when 5 people were knifed in a mafia-related attack. Mike actually had to save one of the dudes' lives and prevent him from bleeding out.

My photographer was already there, Amy Lombard–she arrived 30 minutes before me.

Amy is a photography GENIUS–we had met the day before at the VICE office. She is a true boss–she was an editor at Time in college, and now is a well-established photographer…my photo professor knew about her! We talked about a lot of things in our 20 hours together, and she gave me a ton of good career advice.

It could be the romanticized version that Holiday previously mentioned (front lines of the war in Germania), or it could be totally unromantic and casual. But ultimately, it doesn’t matter, because we’ll never know and the context (location) isn’t important–what matters is that great words, and subsequent greatness, were produced
