ALRIGHT, SOME CLARIFICATION…

This article was my attack on elitism. Just because you go to an Ivy League doesn’t mean you’re smart, or interesting, or real…the people who are offended by this are the people who are mad that I exposed an institution they center their identity around. Like they probably felt “special” and I just showed that they weren’t.

People think I’m sad at college…I’m like Drake, I write about being sad and am actually sad a lot but I’m also pretty happy! My life has a lot of ups and downs, to me, the way it should.

Me, I just try to stay in my own lane and not bother anyone. I have a lot of things going on outside of school, like spending 20 hours in strip clubs for VICE. I live 20 minutes off campus, so I try to hang out with my city friends as much as possible. One place where going to a public school definitely seems like a huge disadvantage in Ivy League admissions is New York City. All my Dalton friends at school would say, “oh, well, you know, it’s so competitive here to get into Yale because everyone wants to go” but there were literally like 12 Dalton kids in my class and like four from Stuyvesant, which is a magnet school that’s ten times as large and extremely competitive. Kids from top-tier NYC private schools had a huge advantage in getting in. On the other hand, kids from lower-tier private schools seemed to have a big disadvantage. There were at least 60 kids my year from Dalton, Trinity, Horace Mann, Riverdale, Fieldston, St. Anne’s, Collegiate, Friends, Brearley, and Chapin. When I became an SAT tutor, though, I learned about all these other very expensive NYC private schools that basically never sent anyone to Yale (Calhoun, York, Trevor Day, Columbia Prep, Dwight). The upshot is that college admission in NYC basically happens in 9th grade.

There's a myth that you have to be interesting and hard-working to get into an Ivy League school. I was disappointed to find out otherwise. Certainly, there are some amazing people, but you also have kids who would attend an Ivy no matter what—the children of Fortune 500 CEOs, movie stars, Middle Eastern royalty. I felt like Chuck Wepner vs. Muhammed Ali…for those who don’t know, Wepner was a little-known boxer who knocked Ali to the ground and went 16 rounds with him. His story inspired the movie “Rocky” AND coincidentally the match was in Cleveland…

“Rocky” was a big aesthetic inspiration for this story. I figured if I didn’t beat him, at least I’d go the distance, and in a way, I did. GZA didn’t checkmate me!!!
