Under Blair, the remaining hereditary peers became “excepted”, i.e. those who still sit in the Lords do so with the backing of “parties and groups” or “the whole house”. It’s still far from democratic but it’s a step forward; I actually wrote my Extended Project on Lords reform (you’re very welcome to have a read!)

The repetition plus adjective reads curiously here, and seems entirely redundant, but it’s obvious what May is doing: proudly proclaiming her status as being on the side of democracy, and against the evil, and apparently undemocratic people who don’t think the EU referendum should be binding. This is something I’ve argued over with plenty of heat but also some light, and needn’t be discussed again, but the real point is that Brexiters are worred that May (a Remain campaigner), is trying to sabotage their carefully curated project of racism and xenophobia. She’s trying to get them on board.

There was a guttural emphasis to the t sounds here, which in many ways is a linguistic indicator of May’s shameless demagoguery and the general Tory power to cash in on working class anger by lowering living standards for the poorest ever lower while they look the other way (in this instance, at immigrants).
