Die Legende schildert Sebastian – über den man nichts wusste, sondern nur sein Grab kannte – ausgehend von der Bedeutung seines Namens: Demnach war er zur Zeit von Papst Gaius Hauptmann der Prätorianergarde am kaiserlichen Hof Diokletians. Er verheimlichte am Hof seinen christlichen Glauben, aber seine Stellung erlaubte ihm, seinen christlichen Glaubensgenossen in den Gefängnissen Roms beizustehen – so Marcus und Marcellianus, Tiburtius, und den vier Gekrönten Claudius, Castorius, Nicostratus und Symphorianus. Er sprach ihnen Mut zu, konnte auch immer weitere Römer bekehren, wirkte Wunder, bekehrte auch römische Adlige und sorgte für die Bestattung der Märtyrer.
