The bachelor flipped the old and tired didactic tale on its head, and the children welcomed this complete change.

Note that the story began like many other stories do – “Once upon a time” with a very good little girl as the protagonist. To the aunt, the story probably began very well, only to go downhill into inappropriate territory. But the children have the exact opposite perspective: the rote beginning was bad, but the violent and bloody ending where the horribly good girl gets mauled was truly beautiful.

Milk puddings are nursery food, school dinners made from sweetened milk and some starchy ingredient (e.g., sago, tapioca, rice, etc). They’re popular in the UK, and many people refuse to eat them, having been forced to finish them as children. Tapioca is generally known as “frogspawn” by children and adults alike.

So Bertha ate something horrible as though it were something delicious. What a good girl!

The word atom comes from the Greek ἄτομος (atomos) meaning “indivisible.”

This name has a taste of irony Wittgenstein no doubt recognized. Ever since people studied matter, they’ve gone on a quest of splitting it into smaller and smaller units in search of the one indivisible particle (or type of particle) that makes up everything: the atom. The problem is that in the 20th century we discovered that atoms are made up of even smaller, subatomic particles, and even today we’re not completely sure that those particles are indivisible.

Maybe one day we’ll find some subatomic propositions?

Despite the replacement of constants with variables, the way we connect and talk about the different parts of a structure is still the same.

In reference to the previous example water is wet can be expressed more generally as x is y, but that swap of constant for variable doesn’t affect the relationship between the terms replaced. It doesn’t change what the definition of “is” is, unless you’re Bill Clinton.

The thief is the devil, God’s adversary whose mission on earth is to undermine God and His creation. Without God, the thief robs people of their things, their lives, and of everything they’ve built. More importantly, this thief wants to take away the sheep from the good shepherd, Jesus, at any cost.

But Jesus staves off the thief and protects his sheep. So that they may live, free from the stealing and murder and destruction, he is willing to give up his own life.

ἵνα ζωὴν ἔχωσιν καὶ περισσὸν ἔχωσιν

The word περισσὸν (peritton), translated here as “abundantly,” carries the meaning of going above and beyond, in an extraordinary way. Jesus comes to bring life, but not just the life already experience as living creatures. Jesus comes in order to allow for life after death.

Appeal = Parakaleo (in Greek)

It means to call aside; make an appeal in view of certain facts. This appeal is mate in view of the doctrines taught in Chapters 1-8 and the dispensational dealings with the Jews in Chapters 9-11.

This is the part of the book where practical application comes into play.

An example of the light from the Lord is found in Psalm 18:28.

You, LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.

At one time you were without wisdom and knowledge of the truth, but now you know the truth and have that wisdom because of the good news of Christ and the salvation He brings.

This chapter deals with the way the living are seen as “children of light.” Paul starts a extended light/dark metaphor (lines 8 through 14) in a comparison of life before and after accepting Christ.

Here Paul exhorts believers that the Lord’s death on the cross was a testimony to them that light has come in the presence of the Lord. The Lord’s presence was and is therefore a symbol for believers to emulate in living a life of light to others.
