The “ancient Greek” is Daedalus. Buck Mulligan is referencing the myth that Stephen’s last name is derived from. The myth becomes an important part of Stephen’s character throughout the novel. Daedalus (Dedalus) will echo the relationship between Stephen and Bloom. Symbolically the son and the father, which also refers to Christ and God the father and by extension the trinity (Molly being the Holy Spirit). All are of course integral parts of Joyce’s character. Throughout the novel Joyce humbly traces a line from Christ to Shakespeare to himself.

PROPOSED SUGGESTION: Just a thought, but “humbly” connecting oneself to Christ and Shakespeare seems like an oxymoron. Can you explain what you mean by “humbly”?

Greek for “golden-mouthed.” A pun on Buck’s fillings which also refers to two early orators, Dio Chrysostomos (c.50-c.117) and St. John Chrysostomos (c.345-407). See this article from the Joyce Foundation for an in-depth explantion.

It is, arguably, the first glimpse of Stephen’s thoughts within the narrative.

Joyce experienced many religions in Trieste – a cultural, historic, linguistic and religious melting pot. Greek orthodox ceremonies were seen by him on the city which he perceived as mock Christian – ‘ Another result of this process of estrangement may have been to bring Joyce to look on the Greek Orthodox mass as a something of a mockery of a Latin one, a mockery he would later find useful when writing the opening of “Telemachus” (McCourt, J, The Years of Bloom, p60).

UPDATE [May 6, 2013]: The Mississippi Supreme Court granted a stay of execution at 2 p.m. on May 6, 2013, just four hours before the scheduled execution. The court voted 8 to 1 to grant a reprieve “until further order. This means Manning’s execution, which had been scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT, will not go forward.

Willie Manning is on death row in Mississippi, awaiting execution for the abduction and murder of two college students in 1992. He was convicted on circumstantial evidence, including the testimony of a jailhouse informant who had previously given a statement implicating another person. No physical evidence has ever linked Willie to the crime, and he has always maintained his innocence. He has been seeking DNA testing of crime scene evidence for years.

Incredibly, the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that there is “overwhelming evidence of guilt,” so no DNA testing is needed. His execution has been set for May 7th. Eighteen men have been exonerated by DNA testing after being sentenced to death, including Kennedy Brewer of Mississippi. We are asking the Governor to stay the execution and order the DNA testing that will definitively prove Willie Manning’s guilt or innocence. Join us in calling on Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant to stay Willie’s execution and order DNA testing!
