A house was built for you, before you were born.

The first line sets up this poem’s main conceit: the grave’s like a building, although as we’ll find out it’s not got all mod cons.

The poem is composed in Old English, the heavily accented proto-version of English spoken and written by the Anglo-Saxons from around the 5th through the 12th centuries A.D.

From 1820-1967, boys at Eton School (a famously ‘posh’ boys public school in Windsor, England) had to wear an ‘Eton suit’ if they were under 5'4", rather than the characteristic top-‘n’-tails outfit. Bloom is assuming that his son will get into Eton – which, if you’ve got enough money, is usually the case.

I would argue that Bloom isn’t necessarily assuming his son will get into Eton but rather imagining that he will wear an Eton style suit, namesake taken from the style of suits worn at Eton School
