Selena compares the damage left by her past love to two very different wounds—that of a soldier suffering the memory of battle and that of a table with a coffee stain. A soldier’s memories of battle would seem an order of magnitude more serious than a stained table, so we’re left wondering just how deep Selena’s wounds go. Either way, the residue won’t come off easily.

This is a reference to famous 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy’s house is taken in a tornado and drops in Oz on the Wicked Witch of the East, killing her. Her sister the Wicked Witch of the West then swears she will get revenge on Dorothy, and Dorothy has to find the Wizard to get back home to Kansas again. While on her journey, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion pass out in a field of poppies (which are used to make opiates).

SZA often references her favorite films—she sampled Rosemary’s Baby on her 2013 EP S, referenced Misery in the music video for “Love Galore,” and name-drops Forrest Gump characters on “Doves In the Wind.” Here, The Wizard of Oz could relate to her trying to find home and settle down, or it could be a reference to her struggles and the people she’s met along her journey.

Selena, Tranter, and Michaels take things way back here with a reference to the Trojan War, which is thought to have occurred in 1200BC. However, the version we know was made famous in Homer’s epic 7th century BC poem The Iliad, and Gomez, Tranter and Michaels are right—there was nothing subtle about it.

Basically, the goddess of love Aphrodite made a young Trojan Prince named Paris and the young Greek Queen Helen fall in love and run away together. But Helen was married to the Greek King Menelaus, and he was so pissed off that he sent over 1,000 ships to get her back and the Greeks and Trojans ended up at war for 10 years. How’s that for a romantic gesture?

Orlando Bloom and Diane Kruger played Paris and Helen in Wolfgang Petersen’s 2004 film adaptation Troy.

Linkin Park’s collaboration with Pusha T and Stormzy is partially inspired by Mike Shinoda’s love of basketball. The song uses fouling out of a game as metaphor for the end of a relationship. Mike Shinoda also said it is an outlier track that does not fit in with the rest of the album. He described the song as ‘sarcastic’ in tone and a ‘change of pace’.

On May 3, 2017, Linkin Park delivered a live performance of this song on Facebook in which Mike debuted a second verse for this song that did not make the final cut.

The lyrics can be found here.
