Steven Madden founded the company in Long Island in 1990 when he tarted selling shoes out of his trunk. Madden’s entanglement with the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont was dramatized in the Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street. The real Madden went to prison in 2002 for securities fraud. He was released in 2005 and his company quickly rebounded.
