Kool Herc plays a key role in the hip hop origin story of “the break.” Jeff Chang probably tells it best in Chapter 4 of his Can’t Stop Won’t Stop. Herc is credited with inventing the technique known as the Merry-Go-Round, the switching back and forth from one record to another to maintain the breakbeat.
