The juxtaposition here is a critical one for the overall film (and novel). Later, Tyler/Jack will argue that true masculinity has been lost in the overly feminized modern society. The “fight club” is started to counteract this trend. As “Tyler” says to Jack after his apartment has been destroyed by a fire, referencing this scene:

You buy furniture. You tell yourself, this is the last sofa you’ll ever need in your life; no matter what else goes wrong, you’ve got the sofa issue handled. Then the right set of dishes. Then the right bed. The drapes. The rug. This is how you’re good to yourself. This is how you fill up your life…And now your condo blows up and you have nothing…And now you find yourself, sitting here, feeling like it’s the best thing that ever happened to you…I don’t know you, so maybe I’m wrong. Maybe it’s a terrible fucking tragedy…I mean, you lost a lot of nice, perfect, neat little shit…A generation of men raised by women. Look what it’s done to you.

Haven’t we all, every once in a while, just happened to stumble upon an Ikea catalogue, and thought, “Wow, wouldn’t that be nice…oh, and that too…mmm, and that, oh yes, and that, and that–yes, yes, yes!” And then you realized you’ve climaxed.
