Young people fly through the week, the boring Monday-Friday routine, ending on the day of their liberation: Friday. Doodlebug then compares youth to two different animals: birds and cats, animals that usually are in conflict. Instead of preying on the birds, “cats” are saving their lives through music (aka by DJing Friday nights).

Digable’s music transcends the usual boundaries separating people.

They rep Brooklyn. Even though many of Digable aren’t from New York (the crew is from Seattle, Philly, and Silver Spring, respectively), they got together in Brooklyn once they became a group.

He can’t believe Juliet’s dead (as, in fact, she’s not), so he goes to see for himself and gets poison to die by her side.

This line is particularly crucial as it recalls the famous ‘star cross’d lovers’ remark from the prologue.

Doodlebug raps a comparison repeated many times in Digable’s music, that the funk of their music gets people high. Which, duh, is worth giving Butterfly a high five for.

Worth noting: even though it’s Doodlebug rapping, he mentions Butterfly as the one that induces the high. Perhaps it is because Butterfly was the one who created Digable Planets; in fact, it began as a one-man group.

Reference to all different types of hair – from a bald head to a head full of “naps” or natural hair. References to hair, in particular nappy hair, are recurring throughout Digable’s music – a nod to Afrocentrism.

By including bald caps, Digable makes it clear that while they are very Afrocentric in their views, they welcome everyone to be part of their musical movement.

The inclusion of bald head could also serve to represent time – enthralling both old people who have lost their hair, and young people who still have healthy natural hair.

Their music isn’t uniform – it creates a new place (“the sweet and funky joint”) in which many different people can come together. As we know, Digable’s music is all about Reachin' new places. Their music takes people from many different places into another dimension, together.
