This interactive handout is aligned with the three day unit plan Singing America: Whitman, Hughes and You. Scholars use this interactive handout to organize their thinking as they compare Walt Whitman’s “I Hear America Singing” and Langston Hughes' “I, Too, Sing America.”

Assignment: The first student to respond to each question will create an annotation; subsequent students should leave their responses in suggestions on that annotation. See green teacher annotation for an example. Each student must respond to every question.

This feels a little awkward in its phrasing. Maybe “we had to move around in order to flea weakness” or “we had to move around to hold on to our power”?

It is kind of awkward, but I like the negative sense of it; after all, “to not feel powerless” is different that “to flee weakness” or “to maintain power”, maybe try a different phrasing with the same litotes aspect?

I really like the tone to this sentence. The traditional routine is explained and acknowledged – “sometimes we kneeled or prayed silently with our heads down” – and then the new method is explained – “since we were up there anyway…”. The matter of fact explanation to why the method changed feels congruent with the personal voice of the piece.

I almost want to see a sentence play a transitioning role between this one and the next (“An extended, rigid palm…”). This sentence is matter of fact and simple – we did this because it felt right. The next sentence takes on a much more serious tone, making the new method of prayer seem very precise. I love both sentences, but it feels as if the voice shifts from one to the next, and it throws me off a bit.

I love this transition! It smoothly takes the reader from the specific physical description – the pebbles – into the larger symbolism that the piece grabbles with. The rhythm of this free write is super on point, well utilizing its topic sentences.

In the pimp game, the bottom bitch is one girl, among several controlled by a single pimp, appointed by him to supervise the others, report rule violations, and sometimes even help inflict punishment on them.

She can become jealous of your other hoes and try to run them off, preventing you from making more money – which is especially threatening given her position of power among the other girls.
