Cameroon pop singer Denicia has made headlines for hawking a skin lightening cream that’s literally called Whitenicious. The cream markets itself as a “dark spot remover” – and it’s bleached Denicia’s skin many shades lighter than her original color.

When it was released in January, it sold out within 24 hours. The internet quickly became flooded with pictures of before-and-after pictures of the singer.

While Denicia denies that the product is actually meant to dramatically lighten dark skin, it has come under fire for promoting lighter skin by means of skin bleaching, promoting self-hatred in women with dark skin tones. To add insult to injury, she also blanked when confronted about the medical risks of the product in a recent Ebony interview.

Bo Burnham goes on a sexist tirade about “sluts” for many lines until the poem shifts to reveal that he has been hurt by one of these so-called “sluts.”

This poem touches on how female sexuality can be slandered and women can quickly be demonized as “sluts” – and how men can pretend women mean nothing to them when in actuality they’ve been hurt.

Unlike Sheryl Sandberg, Virginia Woolf does not blame women for their failures – instead, she grapples with the larger societal structures that restrict and oppress women.

In a famous passage in A Room Of One’s Own, she uses the example of “Judith Shakespeare”. Image, she says, William Shakespeare had a sister, one as gifted as he. An incredible writer and poet, she attempted to rebel against the constraints placed against her. She rejects the arranged marriage her father has set up for her, and tries to make a life for herself as an actor and writer. However, the shame society has made her feel for her own body ends up consuming her. She gets pregnant with the baby of a play director after being ridiculed and rejected, and knowing the life of family responsibilities that lies ahead of her, commits suicide.

Woolf uses the example to show – even for a woman as talented and gifted as William Shakespeare himself, they will ultimately fail due to society’s structural inequalities. Beyond the literal “room of one’s own” a woman must have, she also must have the space in society to form her own path to success.

Some of Schulte’s main points:

  • Today’s workplace is still built around the outdated notion of the “ideal worker"—usually a man who can devote concentrated hours to the task at hand—and doesn’t take into account the millions of women now juggling a full-time career with family life
  • There should be a new system that provides flexibility in hours, paid maternal and paternal leave, and consideration of the desire for more freedom and leisure time
  • Women constantly multitask, coping with the multiple demands of housework, cooking and child care, which often leaves them feeling fragmented, exhausted, and with little or no time for themselves
  • This arena must become more balanced with both parents assuming equal responsibilities in all departments

Critics of Lean In argue that Sandberg’s philosophy comes from an elitist perspective that ends up blaming women for their failures more than providing tools for women to succeed.

  • Maureen Dowd accused Sandberg of using “social idealism for the purpose of marketing”:

People come to a social movement from the bottom up, not the top down. Sandberg has co-opted the vocabulary and romance of a social movement not to sell a cause, but herself. She says she’s using marketing for the purpose of social idealism. But she’s actually using social idealism for the purpose of marketing.

  • Jodi Cantor in the New York Times put astutely:

Even her advisers acknowledge the awkwardness of a woman with double Harvard degrees, dual stock riches (from Facebook and Google, where she also worked), a 9,000-square-foot house and a small army of household help urging less fortunate women to look inward and work harder. Will more earthbound women, struggling with cash flow and child care, embrace the advice of a Silicon Valley executive whose book acknowledgments include thanks to her wealth adviser and Oprah Winfrey?
