King John

William Shakespeare

About “King John”

King John is set further back than the two medieval tetralogies (1 Henry VI, 2 Henry VI, 3 Henry VI and Richard III are usually grouped together as the first tetralogy, while Richard II, 1 Henry IV, 2 Henry IV and Henry V form the second tetralogy), and stands apart from them, which has resulted in its relative obscurity.

The play is an ambitious political drama, throwing the machinations of royal politics into a distinctly unfavorable light. John’s reign is, like so many of Shakespeare’s Kings (and so many English Kings), disputed, and the play depicts most of the events of his reign (apart from the Magna Carta signing), before his eventual death as peace is being negotiated with the French.
