Dickens' last completed novel is this one, about a young woman born into poverty whose prospects for riches evaporate when her fiancé is presumed dead. Taken in by benefactors, she has a chance to observe the manners of the rich and poor. The novel received a lukewarm reception in its time, but has gained in stature since Dickens' death.
