Dickens experimented with the structure of this novel, with the first chapter being narrated in third-person omniscient voice, the next two chapters narrated in first-person by main character Esther Summerson, the next two back in third-person omniscient, and so forth. The story discusses Esther’s search for her past and the progress of an interminable lawsuit over an inheritance.
