This poem is a requiem for Arthur Henry Hallam, a beloved friend of Tennyson’s who died suddenly at the age of 22.
It consists of 133 cantos, composed of 4 line stanzas written in iambic tetrameter and following an ABBA rhyming pattern.
The poem is in many ways a distillation of Tennyson’s thoughts throughout his grieving process, as he explores many ideas, of God, Man, and Nature, through the lens of his tragedy and grief.
