Genius Annotation

Petrarch, developer of the Italian sonnet form, fell in love with a woman named Laura on April 6, 1327. “Soleasi nel mio cor star bella e viva” is the 294th poem dedicated to her in the Rerum vulgarium fragmenta (Fragments Composed in the Vernacular). The central theme of these collected poems is Petrarch’s platonic love of Laura. The collection is divided into two parts, In vita di Madonna Laura (The Life of Lady Laura) and In morte di Madonna Laura (The Death of Lady Laura). “Soleasi nel mio cor star bella e viva” appears in the latter half of the collection.
