Perhaps the most iconic symphony of all time
This is one of the four movements and in the key of C minor:
- Allegro con brio
- Andante con moto
- Scherzo. Allegro
- Allegro
Beethoven constructed this work in his mid thirties at a time when he was dealing with increased loss of hearing. Ironically, as well respected as this symphony is today, at the time of the original performance perception was less than satisfactory.
The orchestra did not play well… and at one point, following a mistake by one of the performers in the Choral Fantasy, Beethoven had to stop the music and start again.
