About

Genius Annotation

The Redmonds were one of the most prominent gentry families of County Wexford, Ireland; a cadet branch of the FitzGeralds, perhaps through the doughty Sir Raymond le Gros, they have been established there since the Norman conquest of Ireland (1169). They were dispossessed of their estates in the 17th century due to their Royalism, Jacobitism, and Catholicism, although one member was raised to the Jacobite peerage for his troubles, becoming Peter, Baron Redmond. Later a branch of the family regained prominence in politics, John Redmond being its most famous member.
