Genius Annotation

Auguste Rodin made The Kiss in 1882. It’s an excellent example of his realist style, which renders the human body in a natural way, and celebrates individuality.

When Rodin first began sculpting, his work was at odds with the the themes and styles of sculpting that were popular at the time: most sculptures would draw on mythology and be heavily stylized and decorative. Rodin’s work was initially poorly received, but his reputation grew as his career progressed.
