But in the Old Testament, God actually calls religious people whores

Meaning

In Jeremiah 3, God is using the prophet to rebuke His chosen people for playing the harlot (whore). He wanted them for himself, desiring that they worship Him only. But they intermarried with people who worshiped idols and that idolatry spread throughout His people

Eventually, they half believed in him while also worshiping their idols just to cover all the bases. This practice was compared to a woman who divorces her husband to be with another man but then wants to return to her husband.

Jeremiah 3:8 reads:

I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery
