Meaning

(= So dignified was he in his behaviour / With his bargains and with his borrowing.)

‘Chevyssaunce’ had connotations of usury; and it’s telling that Chaucer wheels out this couplet right after explaining in no uncertain terms that the Merchant was in debt.
