Annotating Texts:

What can I annotate?

Lit Genius hosts texts of all genres, including poetry, tools for educators, philosophy, classics, and even literature about literature.

How do I annotate?

  • Carefully select text for annotation
  • Use third person only
  • Don't restate the line
  • Link sources, vocabulary, or detail
  • Research, but don't plagiarize
  • Interpret
  • Give it flair
  • Don't overdo it
  • Propose an edit or add a suggestion
  • How do I create a "Song/Album/Artist bio"?

  • Go to its page
  • Provide background information

  • Adding/Fixing Texts:

    How do I add a text?

  • Click "Create" in the header menu
  • Select "Lit" under "Primary Tag" and for author and title, use the "By" and "Title" fields
  • Add the text to the "Text" field. Carry over the formatting and fix line separations.
  • Add additional metadata
  • For long works, create multiple pages and make an album
  • Do not duplicate texts
  • Add excerpts for copyrighted texts
  • How do I improve a page?

  • Edit wrong words/formatting
  • Edit/add "song facts"

    Use Genius in your classroom

    How to Format Lyrics:

    • Type out all lyrics, even repeating song parts like the chorus
    • Lyrics should be broken down into individual lines
    • Use section headers above different song parts like [Verse], [Chorus], etc.
    • Use italics (<i>lyric</i>) and bold (<b>lyric</b>) to distinguish between different vocalists in the same song part
    • If you don’t understand a lyric, use [?]
