Genius Annotation

The genealogy of the initial (male) descendants of Adam and Eve.

This chapter is a key source for Young Earth creationists, who date the age of the earth (at under 10,000 years old) by counting generations of Biblical figures beginning with Adam.

The genealogy concludes with an introduction of Noah and his sons.

This chapter is considered by scholars to be the start of the P documents again. Note the line of Seth both contain an Enoch and a Lamech, and other names are similar. Some scholars consider it possible that the two lines represent the same legendary material, one given by J and the other by P.

There is some similarity with Sumerian myth, which had lists of 9 or 10 kings which reigned before a great flood, who lived many thousands of years. Secular critics may consider this evidence that writers of the Genesis were influenced by these. However, creationists consider the Sumerians evidence for their case, and attempt to reconcile the differences.
