For three years, out of key with his time,
He strove to resuscitate the dead art
This poem contains many autobiographical elements, and these lines seem to refer to Pound’s increasing frustration with the state of English language literature. He is “out of key with his time” due to the inspiration he found in the Provencal troubadours, and other poets and lyricists that were largely disregarded around the early 1900s. Alternately, Pound’s desire to “make it new” could make him ahead of his time.
