Horatio,--or I do forget myself.

from William Shakespeare – Hamlet Act 1 Scene 2 on Rap Genius

Meaning

It seems that Hamlet is, at first, a bit distracted when he greets his old friend. He quickly corrects himself, and greets Horatio with the recognition he deserves, as if to say, “Why it’s my old friend! Sorry I didn’t recognize you at first!”

This instance of friendship between Horatio, a mere guard, and Hamlet, the prince, echoes Henry V. In Henry V, Henry is revered for his connection with “the common man,” and generally the lower class (non-nobility). This sentiment is interesting to think about when one considers how significant the relationship between Hamlet and Horatio appears throughout the story.
