"Siena Mi Fe', Disfecemi Maremma"

from Ezra Pound – Hugh Selwyn Mauberley I (Life and Contacts) on Rap Genius

Meaning

Siena made me, Maremma undid me:

This is a line from Dante’s Purgatorio where the poet meets Pia de Tolomei in Purgatory. Pia de Tolomei was a lady from Siena who was imprisoned and killed by her husband in a fortress in the Maremma. This is also depicted in a famous painting by Gabriel Dante Rossetti. Rossetti’s lover Jane Morris modeled for the painting.
