Meaning

In the episode with the Sirens in Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus has his men stop their ears with wax so they can’t hear the Siren’s song (as in the quoted line above). Odysseus has his men bind him to the mast with his own ears unstopped so he can hear the Siren’s song himself.
