Yet utter the word Democratic, the word En-Masse.
A theme of this book is the association of humans with eachother, through their suffering, laboring, and other capabilities. People in Whitman’s poetry are considered very connected, so perhaps him singing of an individual necessitates him also singing about the collective.
“En-Masse” means “In one group or body; all together”.
The word “Democratic” does not have to refer to the government structure; it can mean a more general belief in social equality.
