It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative
Dr. King understands that deliberately causing a scene in front of a national audience is not ideal. He would much rather look for a peaceful solution to this issue if one existed. But he feels that the immense racism and hostility towards the African-American community has left them no choice but to revolt against the white supremacists' local government. This is what led to the Birmingham campaign.
