I just quit, sort of.
Here we learn that Holden’s expulsion from Pencey is neither the first nor the second time he’s left a prestigious school, but the fact that he “just quit” also reinforces how unmotivated he is. Holden’s not stupid, but he is extraordinarily unenthusiastic and disinterested in his future.
