He promised 'a new start'

from T.S. Eliot – The Waste Land on Rap Genius

The sentence:

“He promised ‘a new start.’”

recalls Ophelia’s regretful song:

“You promised me to wed,”

from Hamlet IV.v.63, further linking the verbal twittering of the Thames daughters to the pub gossip in “A Game of Chess.”

The previous section of The Waste Land closes with Ophelia’s call:

“Good night, ladies, good night, sweet ladies, good night, good night,”

the very same lines that signal her exit via suicide in act IV, scene V.
